Word came out Jan. 10 of a consideration to have shark fishing banned off the Boca Raton beaches. In fear for the safety of local surfers and divers, residents sent several requests to the Boca Raton City Council for the ban.
The proposal included banning the use of shark lures, hooks and rigs within 100 feet from the shoreline. The ordinance would also include prohibiting the use of chum to attract sharks.
A decision to postpone the vote came shortly after when local anglers voiced their concern for the possible ban.
In result of the uproar, the council decided to have the Marine Advisory Board review the measure before proceeding with a vote. The Marine Advisory Board is scheduled to meet Feb. 2 and have the measure returned to the council as early as Feb. 8, according to the Sun Sentinel.
