Anglers prepping for the 2015 Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam, slated for June 13th, have something very enticing to think about. A 3-fish bag in the Slam could be worth over $60,000 to their team if that bag contains the right fish combination. The Pick 3 Jackpot, an optional entry category in the PBSC series, has not had a winner in the past few tournaments and as a result, the pot has climbed to over $50,000 and is expected to exceed $60,000 at the Slam. Three of the tournament’s targeted five species (dolphin, wahoo, kingfish, blackfin tuna and cobia) are pulled from a sealed container on the morning of the tournament. Whichever three fish are selected are the three that must be caught for the chance to win the prize money.
Team Hoo’s Naked had the winning Pick 3 combo at the first leg of the PBSC series in May, However, they were not entered into the added value category, so the pot rolled over again to the upcoming Saltwater Slam. While it was most assuredly a hard pill to swallow for the Hoo’s Naked team, there were around 122 other teams in the tournament that gasped a sigh of relief when they realized that the pot was still alive heading into the Saltwater Slam.
In addition to the Pick 3 pot, there are over 50 other cash prize categories in the Saltwater Slam totaling close to $150,000 in payouts. Couple that with other great benefits like open bar courtesy of Captain Morgan, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Casamigo Tequila and SweetWater beer, along with complementary food from Blue Moon Fish Company, Bonefish Mac’s and Miller’s Alehouse and a team bag stuffed full of angler shirts and cool sponsor freebies, it’s virtually impossible to comprehend how the tournament operates on a $400 entry per team! And, that’s all anglers included!
The Saltwater Slam is the second leg in the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit and the last chance for boats to qualify for the invitation only championship leg of the Circuit, the Saltwater Showdown. 75 teams across the first two legs of the series will receive an invitation to compete in the championship Showdown on August 8th, based on how they perform in the qualifying legs of the series.
The kickoff party and final registration for the Slam will be held at the Pompano Beach Civic Center on June 11th from 6pm to 10pm. The weigh-in is held at the Hillsboro Inlet Park on June 13th and scales open at 4pm. SweetWater beer will be sponsoring a ‘Don’t Float the Mainstream’ Costume Contest for the best-dressed team at the weigh-in, so stop by to see the great catches and great outfits.
